This weekends results…Sat 12th, Sun 13th, Mon 14th

It didn’t have as many goals as last weeks fest but it was another eventful weekend which included one of the best goals you will ever witness. Alex Ferguson described Wayne Rooney’s wonder volley as ‘the best goal he has ever seen at Old Trafford’ in United’s 2-1 victory over rivals City. That result pushes City out of the title race but Arsenal kept their 4 point margin behind Man Utd with a 2-0 victory over Wolves, although a handful of missed opportunities meant it could have been so much more. The Gunners certainly need to take their opportunities in midweek against Barcelona in their Champions League 1st leg. Raul Meireles’ scoring form continued but his side couldn’t make it five wins in a row at Anfield as Wigan fought hard for a 1-1 draw despite their equaliser looking very much offside. Birmingham won late on in injury time thanks to a rejuvenated Nikola Zigic as the Serbian scored his second winning header in two games and moved Birmingham up to 15th place in the table, as they head in to their Newcastle clash later today. It was a dire game at Ewood Park, but it was always going to be after last week where both sides were involved in thrillers, the game finished 0-0. Tottenham came from behind at Sunderland to secure the 3 points and cement themselves into fourth position, but it was the 20th point the Black Cats had dropped after being in a winning position. Blackpool temporarily put a stop to their losing skid after a 1-1 draw at home to Villa, but the most exciting match of the day was the relegation scrap between West Brom and West Ham. It certainly wasn’t a scrap; West Brom were three goals to the good but in the second half Demba Ba bagged a couple and Carlton Cole headed another to secure a Newcastle-like comeback and grab a point away from home for the Hammers.

On Sunday Bolton beat poor Everton 2-0 with goals from Gary Cahill – his first in 13 months – and Daniel Sturridge; the young loanee from Chelsea now has 3 goals in 3 games for Bolton and his move seems to be working wonders for Owen Coyle. His team continue to chase an unlikely Europa place.

Chelsea dropped even more points at Craven Cottage on Monday night and were lucky just to get a point as Clint Dempsey won and missed a penalty in the 93rd minute. Fernando Torres struggled again and was subbed off for the second game running, something you rarely saw at Liverpool unless he was injured.

Tuesday holds more Premier League action as Newcastle travel to St.Andrews to take on former player Obafemi Martins and Birmingham, who have won two on the bounce and are slowly creeping away from the drop zone. Martins is on loan from Russian side Rubin Kazan, and he hopes to make his deal permanent at the end of the season. In the mean time the Nigerian is hoping to form a successful partnership with in form giant Nikola Zigic who has scored the winning goals in Birmingham’s last two matches.
